Dr. (Mrs.) J.K. Phadnis

Paving the path for the realization of our nation's dream to be a super power by 2020, needs a co-ordinated effort of various sectors, Higher Education plays a major role as it contributes to the development of a competent work force, the mainspring leading to national development.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's quote citing that the nation is built in the classrooms is so very relevant in the current times as well; when efforts are on to achieve supremacy in all fields.

In my opinion, besides touching upon the cognitive domain, higher education should have a greater impact by influencing the affective domain and psychomotor domain of students to create citizens for future who will be wise, mature, balanced and focused with respect to their work.

Globally, the thrust areas of Higher Education have undergone a sea- change, with a focus on delivering life long learning skills. In the Indian context too, its education policy reads well but has not succeeded to deliver the expected outcomes especially for branches of general education such as the Arts Science and Commerce streams.

Every student aspires to have a white collared job, but has he been sensitized to the desired attributes for specific professions?

It is the need of the hour to provide a conducive academic environment for nurturing the employable skills, sensitizing students towards goal setting and working towards achieving their goals. The learning environment needs to be designed for developing various soft skills, confidence, competence and capability which is the expectation from our stakeholders. The current education system seldom gives the students an opportunity for creative thinking, observing, evaluating, reflecting and responding to whatever subject is being studied.

Though at our college, several efforts are made by various department associations, and the cultural & sports forum for providing learning opportunities for students, the number of student participants deriving benefit from these efforts is relatively too small in comparison to our total student strength. It is this concern that necessitates rethinking on the ways and means of reaching out to students and making the process student centric.

Knowing the learner, developing a rapport with our learner and supporting the learner for grooming him / her to be a good citizen is genuinely the need of the hour.

I am sure that through team work of teachers as the Class Coordinators & members of the Students' Council a lot more can be achieved. We need to empower our students by assuming the role of a guide, trainer, & mentor for realizing our goal of Pursuit for excellence in Education.
